We arrived home (after a few hours of flight delays) on Friday afternoon around 3:00. Both of us were excited to be home as we missed the kids and the comforts of our own bed. It only took us about 24 hours away to realize how much we love our kids and how much better our lives are with them. I should give a special thanks to my parents for volunteering to fly to our house to watch the kids so that we could have a few days of R&R. It was a great time. Here’s a quick run down of the week’s events:
Monday: Fly to Palm Springs, circle the airport due to windy conditions, run 13.5 miles, eat a huge delicious dinner.
Tuesday: Sleep in, read the newspaper while eating breakfast, take a golf lesson, eat lunch, hike 3 miles with Pam, eat a huge delicious dinner.
Wednesday: Sleep in, eat breakfast, catch up on blogs, eat lunch with Pam, lift weights in the gym, eat a huge delicious dinner.
Thursday: Sleep in, eat breakfast, play golf, run my fastest 7 miles ever, eat a huge delicious dinner.
Friday: Fly home to happy, clean, well taken care of kids.
It was a perfect vacation for me. I got to catch up on sleep, work out as much as I wanted to (which actually turned out to be a lot), play some golf, and eat great food. But like every vacation I’ve ever taken, I fell into the pit of gluttony. I didn’t count my calories, I didn’t take any healthy food with me, and I didn’t care about what I ate…AT ALL.
And even with all of the exercise I did, I left weighing about 171 and came back weighing about 176. I’m a little bit upset that even with all that exercise, I still gained so much weight. But since I’ve been home, it’s already started coming off, so I’m not worried about it at all. It was a great time and I needed a break.
This week, and probably next, it’s back to Plan “B” for me. I even bought some cottage cheese at the grocery store today. I remember hating cottage cheese as a kid, but I thought I’d give it another shot. I used to hate onions and most other vegetables as well.
One of these days, I’ll go on a vacation that doesn’t revolve around food. I’ll come home weighing the same as when I left and won’t feel any guilt about the food that I ate. OK, probably not.
Do you gain weight every time you go on vacation? If not, how do you do it?

Mac, don’t worry about it too much. I always “gain or lose” 4 lbs from air travel. I suspect some sort of dehyrdation / rehydration issue to be the case. You’ll level out very soon. Think of the vacation as an emergency reset. Perhaps this week-long jolt of calories will ramp up your metabolism and the mental decompression will spur you to new achievements!
We just got back from a cruise, and I did better than I expected. I gained a bit of weight back, but not much. Of course, I haven’t been as disciplined as you, so my vacation eating probably wasn’t as different from my everyday eating as it was for you. I did manage to work in a good bit of exercise, but it’s awfully hard to offset gluttony with exercise.

I always gain weight on vacation, I enjoy food to much! But it always comes off quick. I’m sure you’ll be back down to 171 in no time!
I don’t think I’ve ever come back lighter from a holiday.
It’s just a tradeoff I think. The trick is getting straight back on the wagon. That is what I struggle with.
I used to jog on all my vacations until I had kids. Then that was over. I always expect that I will enjoy myself on vacations and that includes eating. I also believe that that is the time to let the body relax as it should be occasionally. So the weight gain is OK. I just plan for it.

Sounds like a great vacation! I wouldn’t worry about the weight gain, it’ll come off again now that you’re back to your routine.

I always seems to gain weight on vacation – I’ve got a business trip to New Orleans coming up in June, that I’m very excited about, but also very nervous. I don’t want to end up derailing my efforts, but I also know it’s going to be much more difficult to stay on track with my eating and exercise.
