Mission accomplished. I’ve been waiting a long time to finally write this post. Now that the time has come, I don’t really know what to say. It sure did take me a lot longer to reach this goal than I thought it would. But I can honestly say, I’ve never been more proud of an accomplishment that I have achieved in my life.
I started this blog back in October of 2007 with an introductory post that I hope, someday, my kids will go back and read. They’re not going to remember that guy. They’re not going to remember the guy who was always out of breath, didn’t button his pants before he tied his shoes, and avoided taking his shirt off in front of everyone except his wife. They’re not going to remember the guy who wouldn’t have been able to play with them when they asked. When I made the choice to change my life, they were too young to understand that I did it for them.

But now I realize that I didn’t JUST do it for them. I did it for myself too. I wasn’t happy with who I was and now I am. In fact, I’m happier and healthier than I’ve ever been in my life. I can run for what seems like an eternity. My kids get tired before I do (I know that won’t last). Now I worry about my clothes being too big instead of too small. I don’t worry about blood pressure. I don’t feel guilty if I make a bad food choice–it’s a choice and I live with it and move on to the next one.
I’ve lost 51 pounds in two years and five months. That’s less than 1/2 pound per week. It took me about twice as long as I wanted it to do, but I never lost sight of my objective. There were times where I stumbled, but I never even considered giving up. One of the biggest reasons for that is the public accountability that comes with writing a blog like this. That was the primary goal for starting this website–I needed something to hold me accountable and to call me out when I was failing. At times, there were other goals as well: popularity, income, a desire to help others.
The first two of those aforementioned goals don’t exist any more. I don’t care if I’m popular, and I don’t care if I make any money off this blog. But the desire to help others achieve similar, or greater results than I’ve achieved is burning stronger than it ever has. There are a lot of people out there who’ve lost a lot more weight than me. There are a lot of people out there who still have a lot more weight to lose. I want to help them–in any way that I can. If you want help, please ask for it. Ask me, ask someone else. But ask. Losing weight is simple, but it isn’t easy. The rewards that come from accomplishing it are priceless and I want you to experience them.
Now that I’ve reached my target weight, my fitness goals are starting to change. I intend to lose more body fat and become a leaner, firmer, more athletic individual. A future post will describe these new goals. I intend to meet my marathon goal of 4 hours. I intend to meet my goal of finishing a 50K race as well.
I’m so happy that I finally made it and I’m ready for the next set of challenges that I set out on. Stay tuned to Get Fit Slowly to see where I’m headed next.

Congratulations! That’s a great accomplishment.
Congrats on reaching your current goal! We came from similar places and are at similar stages right now. I’m looking forward to seeing more about your next set of goals. Over the last few months I’ve been trying to bring down that last bit of body fat (from 15% to somewhere more in the 10-12% range) and have been finding it hard to eat closer to the 100% clean that it will require. It’s been easy to maintain around 14-15% but tough to bring below that.
Congrats Mac!

…and keep up the good work, you are an inspiration to many.
congratulations!
you’re an inspiration to the rest of us.
Great Job Mac!
Congrats Mac, that is just awesome – I am really happy for you! It’s always a great inspiration to see someone who’s been going through the same sort of journey as me reach their goal. It gives me just that much more motivation and inspiration to reach my own goals.
You’re definitely a big inspiration, so I’m glad to hear that you’re going to be keeping with this, even if it’s in a different capacity than before.

Congratulations, Mac! It really is inspiring, and what makes it all the more inspiring is that you took the time to do it well. Proof that small, incremental changes over time WORK. I wish everyone who has ever gone on a crash diet – or who thinks that a crash diet is the ONLY way to drop weight – can go back through your archives and see how you did it. In fact, I think I’ll do that very thing and see if I can find some things to help me. Enjoy Palm Springs, dude!
Wow, that is a great story. When you start out doing something incredible like this, it is with the intention of getting small results from continuous attention. When you see the results coming then you know it is just a matter of time.

Wow! Congratulations. And I really enjoy your blog and look forward to more of it, even though you’ve reached your goal. I think keeping it off is just as interesting.
Congrats on your continuation of weight loss in a healthy manner! I’ve been doing that more or less over the past year after 10 years of out of control eating when I quit drinking and smoking. It’s been so hard incorporating a new lifestyle especially since I’m not working right now but my black lab (and last year my golden who since died) and I go hiking every day for an hour and that is key for me. Now I just need to give up my dish of lower fat ice cream at night to see more weight come off easier. I’m doing basically what you did for weight loss monthly and lost 20 pounds since last spring and have about 30 or so more to go. I get so anxious sometimes b/c I just want to be back to my “normal” weight so I can fit in my old clothes that were actually stylish. But I know if I try to do it too drastically it will back fire and I’ll binge or something…. Thanks for the motivation and message of hope and keep up the good work.
Congrats Mac! I echo the comments of your other readers. So glad that you reached your goal, but more importantly that you have a healthier life and are happier as well. It’s lovely that you settled into running as your sport and fantastic that you can play with your kids and teach them to be healthy little people.
You are definitely a good role model to those of us trying to lose those last 5 pounds and really, just trying to live a healthier, happier life.
Mac: I tried to leave a comment on this last week, but the Internet@Sea service wasn’t very reliable and my comment apparently got eaten somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico.
Anyways, just wanted to say CONGRATS! This is a great accomplishment even if your more recent update indicates that you drifted back up a bit while on vacation.

I think it’s great to get fit at your own pace. I just found a new book on Amazon that has me so excited. I’ve been trying to tell everybody about it because I think it could help people live healthier. It’s called “Looking Good Naked” and I look forward to reading it.
Oh and congratulations, by the way!!! That’s awesome news
