After last week’s amazing weight loss success, I was feeling some trepidation about this week. I shocked my body last week enough to drop more than four pounds. This week, even though I was just as careful about what I ate, and I exercised as much as last week, I just didn’t feel like my body was reacting the same way. I did lose weight this week, and I’m still proud of what I was able to accomplish especially on the exercise front. Check out the graph below to see my daily weights. I managed to lose just about a pound this week.

I’ve been working out with B now for just about a month. Friday, at our workout, I’m going to get measured and we’ll compare those to the ones taken at our initial consultation to mark my progress. I’m really excited about that because I feel like my body has definitely changed in the past month. That’s what I’m really after, not just what the scale says.

Also, on each of the last two Sundays, I’ve increased my run distances by two miles. Just 3 weeks ago, my longest ever run was 14 miles, and now it’s up to 18. To top it all off, this Sunday, T and I have our first of three scheduled 20-milers and I’m really looking forward to that. For some reason, 20 miles just sounds so much farther than 18 miles. And it gets me much closer to my ultimate goal of 26.2 miles. Needless to say, my running is going really well. My body feels really good. It’s definitely letting me know that I’m pushing it, but it’s responding nicely to the challenge.

Here’s to a few more weeks of weight loss and continued running successes!

Hi Mac!

Great work on nearing your running and wieght goals. I start monthly meetings with my personal trainer on Monday. Quick question; are you more concerned with total weight or bodyfat %? I am looking for a good tool to track my %, lbs muscle, and lbs fat progress with. Any ideas?

I’m glad your weight loss slowed to a pound this week. I won’t bore you with my usual harangue about the problems of losing weight too quickly and the resulting appetite-undermining pattern. I’m loving the attention you’re paying to the food you’re putting in your body though. Focused attention really pays off. Good work!

I’m also interested in the conversations you’re having with B about body fat percentage, as Ted brings up above. Say more about this!

Ted–Thanks for the compliments! I think it’s a great idea to meet with a trainer. I’m interested in how your conversations went where you decided to only meet once per month. In the end, I know you are the customer and your trainer will give you whatever you want, but in my experiences they really want to meet more often than that. Also in my experiences (I’ve tried it both ways) I get much better results when I workout more consistently with a trainer than when I try and duplicate a workout that I’ve previously done with a trainer. Your mileage may vary, however.

Regarding your question: I’m definitely more concerned about my body fat % than my body weight. Early on, when I was 220+ pounds, the reverse was true. But really what’s the difference between 172 and 169 pounds on my frame? Not much, I’d rather drop those three pounds of fat and put on three pounds of muscle and still weigh 172 than lose three pounds of muscle and be a 169 pound weakling. As it is, I’m a 172 pound weakling :)

I think the best way to track those numbers you asked about is to have a trainer measure you with skin fold calipers. I know there are drawbacks, but if the same person does it on a consistent basis than you’ll get a fairly accurate idea of the way you’re trending. We’ve always talked about how the trends are what matters, not the actual data points on the graph. Hope this helps.

Dan–If you actually saw what I ate (post upcoming) I think you’d really be proud of me. I KNOW that my focused attention on nutrition is what has been giving me the results to get me to the end of my weight loss journey.

Nice work on the weight loss again this week Mac! Looks like working with B has definitely been paying off these past few weeks. Glad to hear that your longer runs have been going well – good luck with the 20-miler on Sunday!

I’m impressed by how stable/consistent your weigh-ins are. Maybe it’s that you have a better scale, or maybe you’re just more consistent in your living, but my numbers bounce around from day-to-day much more than yours do.

Fit36–I think it is a combination of both of those reasons. I love my scale–it seems to be very precise. If I step on it five times in one minute, I get the same result five times. With my old scale, I would get five different results. Also, I’ve been very consistent in my living for the past 6 weeks or so. Partly because I want to see results on the scale, partly because I’m working out with B, partly because I’m following a training plan for the marathon. Everything is falling into place and the numbers are behaving the way they should be.

Good luck with that 20 miler! That’s a huge milestone and if you can run that you can run 26.2 for sure.

Macdaddy -
Cheers to you thus far! I’m excited to get our measurements done tomorrow. You have worked your tail off this last month. You’re a trainer’s ideal client – consistent, passionate, and willing to put both feet in the bucket!
