Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today is a day full of mixed emotions for me. It’s a day full of excess, a day when it’s ok (at least to most) to eat as much as you want, be as lazy as you want, get as fat as you want. Part of me wants to indulge in all of the gluttonous activities associated with Thanksgiving–the old part of me. But the new me wants to make a go of giving thanks with an eye towards moderation.

Here’s the compromise that I came up with for myself today:

  • Some time this morning, go for an easy 1-hour run
  • Prepare a healthy Thanksgiving meal consisting of: Turkey Breast, Cranberry Wild Rice Stuffing, Spinach Salad, Green Beans, Dinner Rolls, Pumpkin Spice Cake
  • Have a glass of wine with dinner
  • Have a beer, or two while watching football and playing with the kids and our friends
  • Enjoy the time with my friends and family and don’t worry about over-indulgence

Seems like a pretty good recipe for a successful Turkey Day, right? And I won’t forget to be thankful either. There are a lot of things going on in my life right now that are making me realize how lucky of a person I am. I have an amazing wife who’s a great mom, partner, provider, and athlete. I have two wonderful kids who are happy, healthy, funny, creative, and energetic. I have an amazing extended family who supports and loves me and is always there for me when I need them. I have great friends to laugh with and share my life with. And I have my health and fitness which I’ve worked very hard to improve and will never let slip away again.

I’m a lucky man, and I’m thankful for it. Happy Thanksgiving to the Get Fit Slowly community!

Great approach! I think you will have a guilt-free Thanksgiving. Maybe just cut down on your portions :)
