Get Fit Slowly

Making Good Choices Feels Good

by macdaddy on February 10, 2009 · 12 comments

I feel like I’m really starting to get in the groove.  I’m enjoying my running, I’m eating well, I’m sleeping at least 8 hours per day, and my family life is good.  I feel like my life is in balance and that the reason behind this is that I’m enjoying getting fit.

Workouts–I’ve really been doing a good job working out.  In fact, I woke up on Sunday (my 35th birthday) and instead of rolling out of bed and over to the breakfast table, I decided to get my run in.  I was scheduled for an easy 3-miler but didn’t want to bother with the treadmill.  So I suited up, and headed outside for a hilly (and chilly) 3 mile run around my neighborhood.  It wasn’t very easy, but it was nice to run outside.  I didn’t even take my ipod.  Pam had given me a free day to do whatever I wanted with whomever I wanted and I actually chose to go for a run.  I also played 9 holes of golf later in the day, but I got my real workout in first!  The old Mac would never have done it that way.  This fitness bug has really sunk its teeth into me huh?

Eating–I’ve stopped using fitday.com.  Don’t worry, I’m still calorie counting, and I’m doing it better than ever before.  I’m taking JD’s advice and using Lose it! on my iphone.  It works great, is super easy, and since I always have my phone, I never forget to log what I eat.  I’m also logging my weight each day into physicsdiet.com.  It’s a simpler way for me (I’m not a proficient spreadsheet user) of getting an average weight for myself so I don’t have to worry about the day to day fluctuations.  I’m shooting for a 500 calorie deficit per day and so far it seems to be working.  One other triumph that I wanted to share was that I actually requested that Pam NOT make me a birthday cake on my birthday.  There’s another thing that the old Mac would never have done.

Life–Life has been good lately.  I’ve been able to strike a balance between “family time” and “me time.”  It’s still hard for me to get used to the idea that workout time counts for “me time.”  But since I’m starting to enjoy working out more it’s getting easier for me to swallow.  There’s not a lot of time left over for Pam and I to be alone without the kids, but we’re working on that too.   My days are filled with kids’ activities and my evenings are filled with family activities.  I’m able to get my workouts in early in the morning, or while the kids are napping.  It seems like things are starting to fall into place.  I’m happy!

Wow, I did the same thing this year. My birthday is coming up in a couple weeks and my mother asked me about what I’d like for dinner and when she mentioned cake, I said “I don’t want a cake. Ya’ll can have a cake for yourselves if you want, but don’t get it for me. I’m finally getting back on track and I have so much damage to repair, NO CAKE!!” She actually understood and agreed. Normally she would say something along the lines of, “its your birthday…special treat…blah blah.” Even though I fell off the wagon this weekend, I have still lost two pounds this past week so the victory is mine! Congrats on the cake decision, it is a good step.

Congrats on getting things together. It’s such a great feeling when you finally start to get in the groove. Many people who begin a new workout program or diet never get to the point where you are because they give up too soon. It’s nice to read about your success . Keep it up.

It sounds like you’re in the zone right now and are firing on all cylinders. A lot of people are able to do well in one aspect of their life. Few are able to have success in all areas. Nicely done :)

Isn’t it wonderful when everything comes together so perfectly? Thank you for sharing your progress… it inspires all of us to keep going for that balance.

The LoseIt! app is not yet available in the Canadian app store, for some reason; I think it’s only available in the US at this point. Frustrating for those of us who keep hearing how good it is! There are a bunch of similar apps available in the Canadian store but I’m going to wait to see if LoseIt! eventually becomes available here.

Thanks so must for the “LoseIt!” app recommendation — I’ve been struggling to find a good calorie counter and find it hard to remember stuff a day or two later when I finally get online. I’ve just been at it 2 days, but their database seems good and the program is very easy to use.

I’m going to try to use it religiously for 30 days and see how the results are . . . Thanks!

Let me chime in here to lower expectations of LoseIt! It’s great, and I use it, but it’s not perfect. It’s database is limited (but you can add to it, which is good). It uses strange measurements sometimes. And some of the calorie values for foods are…odd.

But, in general, it’s fantastic to have around. It’s not robust: it just does a couple of simple things well, and that’s just what I need.

ah, if it’s not in the Canadian store that’s why I can’t find it. sad!

I agree that calorie values and measurements are odd. I just adjust the serving size in lose it! until the calories match the packaging on the food approximately. And I add new foods all the time.
