On Monday afternoon, Pam was having one of her work colleagues over so that she could see our what our new windows looked like as she’s currently in the market. I made our famous onion-poppy seed focacia, and Pam made an amazing Indian Spiced Curry Carrot Soup. What Pam didn’t tell me was that on her way home, she stopped by the store for the 2008 version of Bon Bons. I think they were made by Dreyers and they’re little teaspoon sized bits of ice cream covered in chocolate and tiny chunks of heath bar. In days gone by, I could have eaten the whole box in a sitting.
Anyway, after the meal, Pam broke out the Bon Bons and we all started eating them. The four of us didn’t finish the box, and I was totally aware of it. Fast forward 24 hours. Pam’s at work. I’m at home with the kids. The bon bons are in the freezer. 14 months ago, since all I do at home all day is sit on the couch and eat, the Bon Bons would definitely have been in my stomach without a thought. But yesterday…the Bon Bons remained in the freezer without a thought! Maybe I am starting to have a healthy relationship with food.
Pam came home last night and after dinner, we broke out the Bon Bons again. I’m not quite sure how the conversation went, but it was something like this:
P: “I’m surprised these are still here.”
M: “I totally forgot about them. I didn’t even think about them once today.”
P: “That’s amazing, totally out of character. You have to blog about it!”
So there you go. One more small step towards healthy living with a person who doesn’t need to count her calories!

Way to go. That is a major accomplishment. I too am thankful to be experiencing similar things. We’re changing,… I’m super glad.

that’s pretty awesome; I’m jealous. I’ve not had so much luck with the halloween candy I bought (but now it’s starting to make me sick, so I think I can hold off until Friday). Then again, I do have a quart of ice cream in the freezer, and I haven’t devoured that yet, but I think that’s just because it is my boyfriend’s favorite flavor, so I wait until I can have a little bit with him.

I wonder if there’s any connection between eating style (grazing vs routinized meal times only) and the ability to ignore tempting foods. When we first started living together, Dan was a really strict eat-only-at-meals person, whereas I tended to think of eating as something that could happen at any time. I slowly came around to his point of view — although I still have tea (including something to eat) in the afternoon, since the hours between lunch and dinner are more than those between breakfast and lunch. It has been a good change for me, though I know there are theories of eating more often that are also pretty persuasive. But I find that I ate more (and more questionable) items while grazing — I didn’t head for the carrots, I went for cheez-its and chocolate…

That’s awesome.
I think that just learning to develop the habit of sticking to a plan helps you not go nuts just because. I started seeing that in myself as I’ve been sticking to my lifestyle changes. Of course I did eat 3 krispy kreme doughnuts today but in my defense it’s been a long time since I’ve done anything like that.

Great example and I agree, the fact that you didn’t even think of them is key.

Fantastic. It’s really cool when you realize you totally forgot about the “goodies” stashed around the house, no?

I envy you. Even if I wouldn’t eat them, I would barely be able to think of anything else.
