It’s Easy To Workout At Home

This past weekend was a great one.  I was productive around the house, I had some quality family time, and I was very active.  In fact, when I woke up this morning for the gym I was already sore from my weekend work.  I kind of felt like Sylvestor Stallone.  Not the running around shooting people with exploding arrows and wiping out the Vietnamese Army with my Army knife kind of Sly, but the running through snow, chopping and hauling firewood Sly from Rocky IV.

I spent a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon prepping our garden for the upcoming Winter.  I stripped all the veggie beds, put away the watering system and tilled them all up so they look nice and neat.   My tiller is a beast, I bet it weighs more than me.  Pushing it up and down the hills of my garden is quite a chore and I was a big, sore, dirty, sweaty mess come Saturday evening.  Then on Sunday afternoon, I herded cows, worked on the chicken coop, and moved a truckload of firewood from the pasture up to the house so that we could stay warm and cozy this Winter.

Like I said, when I woke up this morning, I was sore–and I felt great.  So what you may say, right?  Well here’s my long drawn out point.  I DON’T need a gym to get a great workout!  There’s plenty of stuff to do around my small acreage that will work out my muscles, and my lungs.  I just need to get off my butt and do it.  And it’s actually easier then packing up the gym bag, driving the 15 minutes to the gym, and pretending to be a hamster on a merry-go-round.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up my gym membership and I’m not going to be decreasing my workouts there.  But there’s something to be said about mixing up your workouts so that your body doesn’t get used to the same old routine.  And besides I earned husband and dad points as well.  Everybody wins!

nice stuff. I agree…we can get a good workout doing stuff around the house. In fact, I got a good arm workout Saturday by scrubbing the tub! like you said…it’s also great to get the husband points!

You are right: people must get off of their butts and just do it. People tend to forget that doing yard work or household chores can do quite a bit in terms of burning calories. I once used a bodybugg for a period of time to see how many calories I burned during random activities. I was very surprised at my caloric burn during every day activities ranging from yard work to grocery shopping. all the activity really adds up, especially when dieting.

Yep, I love doing workouts around the home. Running with the lawnmower is a favourite. ;)

The ultimate cheapskate is big on the workouts at home by working around the house.

Workouts at the gym are great, but they don’t necessarily prepare you for real life.

The Pec Dec and Leg Extension machines are no substitute for wrestling with that roto-tiller.

I recently started working with a high school kid trying to earn a football scholarship. He has been a gym junkie for the past two years.

We had our first real workout this past Saturday. Boy, was he in for a wake-up call.

Hill sprints, combined with car pushes, sled drags and various total body band exercises had him just about losing his lunch in under 20 minutes.

According to the text I received this morning, DOMS has introduced him to a few muscles that he didn’t know he had.
