Holy cats! I forgot to post day fourteen of the Get Fit Slowly one hundred pushup challenge. Somebody should have said something. You’ve probably already done your pushups, but if you haven’t, here’s the schedule for week five:
Note that you have more sets than previously! For those of you on week four, use this schedule:
I did day two of week three today. If you’re on one of the previous weeks, you can find the schedules here:
I nailed today’s set. This was my best pushup day by far. I did the required 16-14-14-12, and then nailed 18 on the max set. I probably could have done more if I hadn’t been pushing myself quickly. How did I manage this?
- I didn’t do my pushups until early afternoon, after breakfast and lunch.
- I used one commenter’s “drive with the heel of your hands” technique.”
- I went at a swift pace, not a slow one. I wasn’t rushing, but I wasn’t dragging along like I usually do.
- I was listening to XM 81, the dance station.
I started a few weeks ago doing 28 pushups in one session. Today I did 74. I’m still skeptical about reaching the goal of 100 consecutive, but I’m much less skeptical than I once was.

I think that the 100 pushup thing is going to end up being a matter of commitment more than anything else. It won’t happen in six weeks for me, but I think that the main barrier to success will be whether or not I stick to it. My biggest complaint right now is that I’m adjusting the balance of my workout schedule to accommodate my pushups. For example, I’m not rowing on the off days as I want to give my arm/shoulder muscles a chance to recover. The good news is that I can hop on the elliptical for cardio on those days.
As an aside, Week 5 looked do-able to me until I saw that the Day 1 max round requires 30+ pushups - yikes! Assuming that I can reach the required minimum on the Week 4 exhaustion test, I’m sure I’ll end up repeating Week 5.

Unfortunately, I’m under orders from my seamstress to do no more pushups until my wedding is complete. Otherwise, my dress won’t fit!
I’m going to keep on my fiance though. He’s doing really well on Week 4 right now!
I’m going to keep checking back to see everyone elses’ progress though.

Illness has struck. I missed day 2 of week 5, now I will try to get one more good pushup day in this week and repeat week 5 next week.

i didn’t manage this on Wednesday night (rock climbing) but i did it on thursday. i am really preferring the bazillion small sets, rather than 4 big sets. I did the easiest column, and managed 32 in my final set. Go me!
i think i’m going to repeat this week though.

I will be doing day 3 of week three again tonight - for the second time around. Like fit36 said, my only complaint about the program is that I’m working my fitness program around the 100 pushups, not doing my normal upper body weight sessions so that I can recover. I’m not sure if I’m going to last the entire time just because I’d like to get back to my normal cardio/weights routine. We’ll see, I’ll stick with it for a few more weeks probably.
