When I got on the scale this morning, I was surprised to see the numbers. I had a roller coaster week of food and beverage consumption and my weight fluctuated as well. We hosted a small dinner party on Saturday night where I lost consciousness–meaning I wasn’t conscious of my calorie consumption at all. We cooked great food, drank great wine, and had great conversation. It was that special kind of night that where food just couldn’t get in the way of life.
One of the things I’ve been noticing lately is that my water consumption has significantly decreased. I was drinking between three and four 32oz. cups of water each day. I can’t remember the last time when I finished even one of those cups. I’ve got to get back on track with that because I notice a real difference in appetite levels and rate of food consumption when I’m drinking throughout the day. However, drinking water is very hard for me. I come from the land of diet soda and juice with every meal. I’ve managed to stay off of the juice, but my diet soda consumption has definitely increased because It’s been around for our various house guests and parties over the past few weeks. It’s gone now, and there’s no juice, so if I want to drink, then I have to drink water or milk.
Hawaii is only four days away now. The excitement running through the family is palpable, and growing every day. I wanted to get down to the 200 lb mark before I left, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen–especially because I don’t really even believe that the scale was correct today. Regardless, I’m very happy with my progress so far. I’ve almost reached my half-way-point. All of those little set backs which used to derail me in the past haven’t succeeded and I really feel there’s nothing that can stop me now. I’m a little worried about being away from home for two weeks, but it will be a good test to see where I’m at. I plan on working out while on vacation and still watching what I eat. My goal is to come home not weighing more than when I leave. Another goal, one that I’ve failed miserably at, was getting ahead in my writing so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it very much while on vacation. I don’t know how much posting I’ll be doing while I’m gone, but I’m sure I’ll manage to find some time to give some updates.
And finally, I found an interesting NYT article for my Wii playing blog partner. The article provides a comparison between “sedentary gaming” on the Xbox and “active gaming” on the Wii. At rest, the children in the study burned ~72 calories per hour. Playing the Xbox boosted caloric expenditures to just over 100 calories per hour while the Wii helped kids to burn about 170 calories per hour. By comparison, a real game of doubles tennis, on the court, burns approximately 318 calories per hour. The article didn’t mention Dance Dance Revolution which I’m sure burns more calories than Wii tennis, but it does say that Wii sports is no substitute for the real thing…shocking!

Dance Dance burns 3,000,000 calories per hour. I’m sure of it!

Don’t watch what you eat on vacation, just make sure to get on track the day after you get back. And I don’t think you’ll have to use the gym facility, the outdoor activities in Hawaii should take care of your exercise requirements.

I too did poorly at a social event this week. I went out early in my friendly poker game and found comfort in Beer and Kettle chips.
It’s been a while since I’d had a kettle chip, those things are soooooooooo…
Salty.
I really don’t know why I kept eating them.

Drinking water bores me, so I’ve stocked up on many flavors of herb tea. I put one in each tall water bottle (cold), and it lightly flavors the water.
Too much diet soda, not good for you! (article about that in the Times recently)
Eating whatever you want on vacation is great, but eat what won’t make you sick.
I notice that I can eat “bad” foods on vacation, but if I go back to old portion sizes, I end up feeling nauseous.
(I’m down almost 20 lbs - but it took a YEAR).

I’ll agree with Joe and say to not pay too much attention to your eating on vacation. Maybe make it a week of “metabolism boost” by consuming much more than you are now.
I’ve recently switched from diet drinks to water. I acutally just wrote a post on my blog about it yesterday. The reasons to drink water over diet drinks or anything with caffeine are just too great imo. I am finally a believer.
I hope to buy a Wii for my wife’s birthday in March if I can find one. I have no idea if they are still scarce or not but I just sold my last WoW account for $300 and have it waiting in the wings for a Wii. I wonder how many calories WoW burns? Probably -3,000,000.

Having lived in Hawaii for 3 years, the eating shouldn’t be a problem. Plenty of healthy fish choices (as long as you don’t get them fried) and fresh fruits. Make sure you take your return flight information if you go to the Dole Plantation so you can have a 6 pack of fresh Hawaiian pineapples waiting for you at the airport when you leave!

On vacation - when in doubt - walk walk walk!! You’d be surprised how much you can offset the eating. Have a great time!

With respect to not drinking water, I always seem to drink more when I have my 1L jug with me. I also find that I’m more apt to drink more water if it’s lukewarm instead of “chilled” from the fridge. Oh, and if I’m munchy a glass of ice chips sometimes helps.
