It’s hard to believe I’ve only being doing this for eight weeks. In endeavors past, I’d have given up long ago. In fact, I started off 2007 by losing some weight and gave up before the end of January, even though I was being successful. So what’s different this time? I’m 100% sure that the reason I’m not giving up this time is because I’ve made this journey so public. I’ve told everyone I know about our little website and lots of friends and family are reading every day. Just those extra eyes on me, cheering for me to be successful have proven to be what I needed all along. I’m not going to quit. Even though sometimes I want to stuff my face and screw the gym.
Some of you all have made it seem like I’m not happy with my new lifestyle. I’ve also got the feeling that some of you think I’m making too many changes too fast and that there’s no way I’ll be able to keep it up without getting discouraged. I know this site is about slow…I know it isn’t called getdiscouragedquickly.com…I don’t mean to sound discouraged or upset. In fact, I’m happy with the way things are going (and not just because the scale had a good number on it this morning). I’m enjoying the writing aspect, the partnership with J.D., and being back in the gym–even if it is hard. And oh yeah, I’m totally satisfied with my personal training experiences so far. After only one guided workout, I felt like I was pushed hard, that I learned some things that will help alleviate the boredom of being in the gym, and that this type of workout is very flexible and will keep me coming back. I even tivoed The Biggest Loser last night and drove to the gym in a snow/ice storm after the kids went to bed. So yeah, I think I’m motivated–but I’m also sore.

If it feels like “only 8 weeks”, then you’re doing something right! That means that you’re working on things you can do for the long term and creating a “new normal”. (No holding your breath and doing extreme and bizarre things for you!)
Heh — times will come when you do stuff your face and screw the gym. It’s what you do after that that spells healthy lifestyle or trainwreck. The more time you get under your belt with the healthy lifestyle, the more you will change your habits to support the lifestyle. Then you’ll be more likely to pick yourself up and go right back to your “new normal”, instead of rearranging your life again to go back to eating junk food and avoiding activity.
Yay on the scale reflecting your work. (Some days it will, some days it won’t. Trends will tell.)

Thanks for keeping up that motivation. Keeping up with this site has helped remind me to keep up my own fitness goals which were recently derailed from being sick for a week, and I think it was this site that encouraged me to keep it up in a big way. Making your weight loss goals public is a great step - it’d be great to add some community aspect to this site like the forums on J.D.’s Get Rich Slowly.

How ’bout the forums after we get the editable comments?

I think making all the changes all at once actually makes it easier. That’s what I did in Jan., and so far I’ve lost 12 lbs. I think making it public also helps. It gives you the feeling that you’re not alone. I’ve also started my own blog about my weight loss journey and I feature healthy recipes that taste great! Just taking on the personal responsibility I think is the major key to success.

Rock on, MacDaddy!
Glad to hear that you’re liking your personal trainer. Seemed like a lot of folks were wanting to baby you in your first post about it. So what if you almost vomitted.
YOU DID SOMETHING!
THAT’S what’s most important. And you’ve really encouraged me as well (not that I ever wanted you to vomit, mind you).
Keep it rollin’, baby!
