I haven’t done well at all the last two weeks as you can see. But I’m still not discouraged. J.D.’s posts from yesterday motivated me to get back on track and so I’m ready. The major holidays are over and so are the parties. My wife’s back at work and I’m ready to settle in to the routine that will become my life–slowly.

I’m ready to get serious about exercising too, so watch out for some updates about that as well.

I admire your efforts to become fit and I think there’s no better way than to make yourself accountable by posting your progress to the world.

I tried this with my own blog, and even though there weren’t many people reading it at the time, it made me feel as though I didn’t want to let my readers down.

I specifically stated my goal, and although it wasn’t as ambitious as yours, I’m proud to say I exceded it.

Posting your weight and your progress is a great way to encourage and put a little pressure on yourself.

Keep it up, I look forward to reading more!

I would feel good about the 5 pounds. Holidays are a rough time. My weight hardly moved during December, but I’m extremely fired up now, refreshed after a vacation, and I have a new plan in place to get my progress moving again.

    Best of luck!

Hey, good for you for getting started. It’s hard not only to break old habits, but to develop new ones so don’t be too phased by a few rough patches.
The thing I started last year which I am expanding on a bit - and you might laugh - is putting a sticker on the calendar for every day that I exercise. For me “exercise” includes talking a long walk outside and exercising along with a DVD. My teachers must have really trained me with gold star stickers at some point because I love seeing my accomplishments on that calendar.
    Cheering you on,
Carol in Wisconsin (where it’s 14 degrees today)

Just think, you can’t give up! I’ve read your other site for a while now and you have really inspired me about money. I started reading this new blog just as I too started to eat better and exercise, and I am holding you fully accountable for keeping me inspired, ok?

How are you calculating your body fat? I couldn’t find any mention of your methodology in your archives.

Yeah, we need to get some of the basics established around here. We’ve been toying with the blog, just playing around, but it’s time for us to give you things like our health histories, and the tools we currently use.

I’ll make that a priority for the next couple weeks.

I’m not sure what Mac is doing, but I’m using a special bathroom scale that uses electrical impedence to measure body fat.

Understood. Thanks for the quick reply.
BTW - I wasn’t knocking the blog. I think it’s great that your documenting this facet of your life. Just curious as I’ve seen a few different methods ranging from scales to calipers, water submersion and body measurements. Always seemed like an inexact science to me and was curious if there was any method to the madness ;-)

Roger: I too am using a bathroom scale that measures my body fat by electrical impedance. I’m not sure how accurate it is, but it’s the only means that I have at my disposal.

If you guys have a flexible measuring tape and the inclination, would you be willing to compare it to the method described below and report back with your findings? Interested in seeing if the results compare favorably as I don’t really want to purchase a new scale ;-)

Congrats on your 5 pounds gone so far! Looking forward to following your journey!

Mac, be easy on yourself mate - you didn’t gain ANY weight over the whole holiday period and you actually lost some!

Firstly, 5lb in 4 weeks is good going at ANY time of the year. The slower you loose the more likely it is to be a sustainable thing - go look at your blog title again ;)

But most importantly, how do you think that would compare to the last few Christmasses?? I’ll bet you tend to put on several pounds mostly over Christmas, at least the last few years - so you get “extra psychological credit” in my book for doing so brilliantly through what is the HARDEST time of the year for most people with regards to weight.
