To Hell With Stagnation!

Ah, there’s nothing like a whiney blog post to get a fellow off his ass and out the door. Immediately after posting about how I’m having a difficult time getting started toward my fitness goals, I put on my coat and walked to the store.

I bought a bag of apples and some salad greens.

According to my trusty pedometer, in the end I walked 4515 aerobic steps (or 2.26 miles) in 40 minutes. And now I’m going to eat an apple for breakfast.

Hi. On the Arts and Letters site there’s a link
    http://www.reason.com/news/show/123521.html
to a review of two books on weight loss, Gina Kolata’s Rethinking Thin and Brian Wansink’s Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think
one line in the review made me think of your site: “small changes in everyday behavior that over the course of a year can result in a weight loss of 10 to 25 pounds.” That sounds like getting fit slowly (!). Wansink argues that’s about the best you can do if you don’t want to end up gaining all the weight back.
Naturally, there are always people who do better, but I think that rather than aiming too high, I am going to try to think about small changes that might lead to a different weight by January 1, 2009, one that can be maintained without a lot of conscious will power.

Hey J.D., I was looking for GFS forum so I can start my 2008 marathon training post. Any plans to host a forum on this site?

Don’t know if this will be insprirational or not, but several years ago, on my 40th birthday I rode a bike for the first time since I was probably 10 or twelve. I went 15 miles and was shocked that I could do it. I got hooked on it and rode over 100 miles a week until I moved to a very “bike unfriendly” town. Two lane roads with red necks who thought bikes should be for children and confined to sidewalks. I am now 58, out of shape and still in an area where it is reallly not safe to ride. Would love to ride agian!!! Good luck! It’s a very relaxing and stress relieving hobby1

I hope that you are eating more than an apple for breakfast. You need more calories and protein to start the day.

One of the traps I fell into when I was younger was that I would eat cereal for breakfast and be hungry an hour later. If I didn’t eat anything, I wouldn’t get hungry until lunch. We all know how bad skipping breakfast is so I’m not going there:-)

It’s just that many people (including myself) processes carbs really quick. I also get a big insulin spike as the carbs convert to sugars making me feel hungry. When I started incorporating protein into my diet, my hunger feels lessened quite a bit.

Two book I highly recommend: Body for Life by Bill Philips. He pushes the small six meal a day plan with roughly equal amounts of protein and carbs per meal. The other one is Eat Right for Your Blood Type. This book may have little more mumbo-jumbo, but it shows how people’s chemistry is very different and the diet that works for one won’t necessarily work for another.

That’s the way to get it done!

I had planned to kick start my exercise on the 1st, but I made excuses since it was a holiday and didn’t do anything. Thankfully I felt bad about that today and I hopped on the treadmill for my first workout of the New Year.

No time for whining or stagnating now! :)
