When I have time, I try to visit the web sites of people who leave comments on my various blogs. Today I stopped by the Nagel family site, where I found Eric describing how he’s managed to drop from 22% body fat to 12.5% body fat in nine months. 12.5% body fat!

I left a comment asking about his method, and he was kind enough to share his fitness routine and dieting tips. His techniques:

Fitness

  • Plyometrics and weight-lifting a couple times a week, and short runs when possible.
  • Working out with groups and/or a trainer.
  • Patience. “The other key ingredient in getting fit is time.”

Dieting

  • Drink lots of water.
  • Eat every three hours.
  • Eat with your left hand (to slow you down).
  • Use a small plate.
  • Brush your teeth after eating.

I think that last technique is clever — I hate eating after brushing my teeth. Also, I keep intending to use the small plate trick, but always forget to do so. As Lauren likes to remind me, small portions are a powerful tool toward sensible eating habits.

Interesting tip on always brushing your teeth after eating. That would help slow me down!

I have to say that the small plate trick works surprisingly well. You just feel like you are getting more food when it takes up the whole plate. If the same amount of food is sitting in them middle of a large plate all by itself I always feel the need to go and find more food to fill it up. I almost always eat my lunch at home off a small salad plate vs. our much larger “regular” plates.
